User Interviews

Capture and analyse customer interviews inside Deck.

User Interviews

User interviews need no introduction. It is the art of talking to your customer to uncover improvement opportunities and improve your product.

At Deck, you're able to:

  1. Upload a customer interview video or audio file — or paste/upload a raw transcript directly,
  2. Add your research goal and discussion guide,
  3. Get the interview auto-tagged by Deck's Agents (in less than 5 minutes),
  4. Visualize and edit the interview post-agentic synthesis.

We try and make designers and researchers' tasks as easy as possible so you can spend time doing what matters most: actually taking decisions out of the information you have.

Upload options

MethodBest for
Video or audio fileRecorded interviews — Deck transcribes automatically via AssemblyAI
Transcript file or pasteWhen you already have a transcript (.vtt, .txt, Google Meet export)

Both paths produce the same AI-powered insights, themes, and quotes. See Transcript Upload for details on the transcript path.

Uploading a Video or Audio Interview

  1. Navigate to Manage → User Interviews
  2. Click Add Interview — a guided upload wizard opens
  3. Select Interview Video as the input type
  4. Drop your video or audio files onto the upload area — you can add multiple files at once
  5. Deck advances automatically to the Interview Details step as your files begin uploading
  6. Fill in each interview's name, date, and optionally a customer email directly in the table
  7. Need to add more files? Click Add More to include additional recordings without starting over
  8. Once all files finish uploading, click Upload Interviews to submit

Tip: You can edit the interview name and date for each file while uploads are still in progress — you don't have to wait.

What Happens After Submission

Once you click Upload Interviews, Deck immediately adds your interviews to the interviews list with a Processing status — no page refresh needed. You can navigate away and come back; the list will update as each interview finishes.

Behind the scenes, Deck's AI agents:

  1. Transcribe the audio or video via AssemblyAI
  2. Extract insights — key themes and pain points are identified
  3. Map quotes — verbatim quotes are linked to each insight
  4. Tag themes — insights are grouped into your existing themes or new ones are created
  5. Generate a summary — a narrative overview of the interview is produced

Processing typically completes in under 5 minutes. You'll see the status change from Processing to the interview view once it's ready.
