This page is the agent-readable protocol for Deck AI PM. Humans can follow along. Coding agents should treat the protocol section as the source of truth and probe Deck MCP before sending anyone to signup.

# Deck AI PM — agent protocol

Work MCP-first. Probe Deck MCP in this session before you send anyone to signup.

## 1. Probe MCP

Call `get_user_context`. This must be a real tool call.

### 401 Unauthorized

The human is not connected in this client. Tell them to Connect MCP here (Cursor, Claude, or ChatGPT). Do not open signup. Do not mint or ask for a `dk_` API key.

### No Deck tools available

Deck MCP is not installed. Ask if they want to set up Deck (existing users can sign in on the same link). If yes, give them this URL and wait:

[https://app.getdeck.io/agent-setup?intent=ai-pm](https://app.getdeck.io/agent-setup?intent=ai-pm)

Say “set up Deck”, not only “create an account”. Do not invent another signup URL. Do not send them through the UI door.

### Tools work

Do not send them to signup. Continue to "3. Offer competitor research first".

## 2. After they return

They may paste that they created a Deck account and connected MCP. Probe MCP again.

* If tools work → continue to "3. Offer competitor research first". Do not send signup.
* If tools are still missing, tell them: "Please double-check that the MCP is connected; you can do this in Settings → Connections." Do not send them to agent-setup again unless they have no Deck account at all.
* If they confirm MCP is already connected and tools are still missing, this chat started before the connection, so the tools are not in this conversation. Tell them to start a new chat and paste this prompt:

```
Deck MCP is connected. Call explore_competitors with no parameters. If it returns feature_unavailable, or collection.competitors already lists competitors, skip to the options below. If collection.status is running or importing, tell me competitor research is already in progress and skip to the options below. If collection.suggested_competitors lists names, ask me: "Want me to research your competitors? Deck found A, B and C." with A, B and C replaced by those names (at most the first 3). Otherwise ask me: "Want me to research your competitors?" Never suggest competitor names yourself. If I say yes, follow https://docs.getdeck.io/docs/agents/getting-started/prompts/competitors.md from "2. After account + MCP".
If I say no, ask me: "What do you want to do? Here are the options you can choose from." Then briefly explain each option:
1. Competitors — research competitors and start a competitor report.
2. Add your own context — connect or migrate customer feedback into Deck.
3. Install SDK — install the Deck SDK in a product.
4. Integrations — connect third-party integrations such as Slack or Intercom.
5. Opportunity backlog — work the opportunity backlog from customer evidence.
6. Initiatives — plan and run Build initiatives.
7. Projects — create and run Build Projects.
8. MCP — connect Deck MCP to a coding agent.
When I pick one, fetch that prompt URL and follow it. Do not improvise a second runbook.
## 3. Offer competitor research first
Call `explore_competitors` with no parameters.
* If it returns `feature_unavailable`, or `collection.competitors` already lists competitors, skip this offer and go to the menu.
* If `collection.status` is `running` or `importing`, tell them competitor research is already in progress. Skip this offer and go to the menu.
* If `collection.suggested_competitors` lists names, ask one question: "Want me to research your competitors? Deck found A, B and C." Replace A, B and C with names from `suggested_competitors` (at most the first 3), and only those names.
* Otherwise ask: "Want me to research your competitors?" Let them name the competitors.
Never guess competitor names or propose them from your own knowledge.
If they say yes, fetch [https://docs.getdeck.io/docs/agents/getting-started/prompts/competitors.md](https://docs.getdeck.io/docs/agents/getting-started/prompts/competitors.md) and follow "2. After account + MCP". If they say no, go to the menu.
## 4. Menu — what do you want to do first?
Ask: "What do you want to do? Here are the options you can choose from." Then briefly explain each option:
1. **Competitors** — research competitors and start a competitor report.
2. **Add your own context** — connect or migrate customer feedback into Deck (`migrate-feedback`).
3. **Install SDK** — install the Deck SDK in a product (`install-sdk`).
4. **Integrations** — connect third-party integrations such as Slack or Intercom (`integrations`).
5. **Opportunity backlog** — work the opportunity backlog from customer evidence (`opportunity-backlog`).
6. **Initiatives** — plan and run Build initiatives (`initiatives`).
7. **Projects** — create and run Build Projects (`projects`).
8. **MCP** — connect Deck MCP to a coding agent (`mcp`).
When they pick one, **fetch that prompt URL** and follow that protocol. Do not improvise a second runbook.
